Earth Island #1 -
the Robert Crumb cover poster -
1970 - m/nm - uncirculated
-
Even if you're not a Crumb collector, this poster makes a
rare acquisition of 'earthy' comic art .. an early interpretation
of the classic Time cover style by Robert Crumb, with a pastoral,
natural bent.
Created from handcrafted
Zipatone
layers in the classic method, this piece might be considered
a print in the literal sense as the poster was not generated
as a reproduction - these are the originals. The pen and ink
and Zipatone layers were never returned by the printer - claimed
lost in 1970 on delivery of the posters.
If you do collect R. Crumb, what a hanging! Is any Crumb
collection complete without a representation of #1 ... and it
makes a great start or unique display of the '70's roots of environmentalism,
printed the same year as the inaugural Earth Day gatherings.
Earth Island magazine published
this 16 7/8" by 21 1/2" poster in the fall of 1970
from the same Zipatone originals created for the cover art by
R. Crumb during a stay in Chicago. Scans above, which lead to
the larger images, are from the magazine art. The poster has
a slightly different color hue - more green than blue, for instance
.. a brighter orange - than the actual magazine cover. Also,
minor Zipatone separation prior to negatives being created for
the poster yield a small difference to the area 'underfoot'.
Paper is 100# matte finish stock, untreated.
About 500 were originally printed, distributed to the booksellers
and distributors of the period which handled the magazine. Many
of
the posters were
shipped quarter-folded along with magazines to individual stores.
This item has never been folded, or rolled, but exhibits a slight
dimpling in the lower right leaf border just above the yellow
banner bar.
This is an original print - one edition - limited in press
run number, and distributed free through the magazine distributors
and bookshops. Due to the Zipatone creation process, it would
not be considered a reproduction. It is signed in the print with
copyright notice by R. Crumb - in lower left.
Item
will be shipped sturdily rolled, unless arranged otherwise, such
as a flat shipping treatment.
It is a beautiful poster, even with the Zipatone seam showing
in the upper left corner through the 5 in 50 ... his supplies
were dwindling. This is a Mint/Near Mint item near perfect ...
no tears, folds or rough corners .. or tape, or stains ...
